In this course, students will explore the profound and enduring legacy of slavery in Cambridge through the critical concept of collective memory: What is the community's prevailing memory of slavery in Cambridge, and what is the tangible impact of this memory on contemporary life and social justice? Furthermore, this course asks students to grapple with the essential question: How can and should we rethink this collective memory? Students will critically analyze scholarly research, public history, and archival silences through a series of guest lectures, field trips, research and workshops to understand how the history of enslaved and free African Americans in Cambridge has been remembered, forgotten, or intentionally obscured. Students will take an active, public-facing role in sharing and/or reshaping this memory through the development of a public history exhibit.
