H415 | Leadership and Community Action STARs

Course Description

The STARs course is designed to provide students with a comfortable and engaging arena to discuss, debate and consciously confront real issues affecting their lives. Topics include cultural diversity, global awareness, healthy relationships, personal identity, pop culture, school and community dynamics, social media, stereotyping, substance use, teen wellness and more. Students receive leadership and issues training so they can serve as peer leaders at CRLS and in the upper and elementary schools. And they learn skills to create and carry out an Action Project that highlights their interests and ideas to bring about change and impact. Beyond crafting their own unique and collective experience, the STARs conduct awareness campaigns and design, organize, and host school-wide assemblies and events like All-STAR Games, Multicultural Night and STARs Showcase. As active members of the STARs program, students uphold the school motto of Diversity, Opportunity and Respect and reinforce attitudes and behaviors that promote connections, equity and student engagement both in the class and out in the community.
